What Are Winches, Winches And Winches?

Winch, winch and winch are all mechanical devices, which can convert rotary motion into linear motion. Their working principle is essentially the same as that of lever. That is, by exerting force on the lever or crank, the work is completed through the fulcrum at the center of the cylinder and the load connected to the rope, chain or cable.

The original manual winches and winches were used on ships to raise and lower anchors. One or more sailors will use a lever to wind a rope or chain on a winch drum placed horizontally or a winch drum placed vertically. At present, the drum equipment that uses manual or electric means to pull the load is collectively called "winch". The manual winch as shown in the figure below is widely used to lift the sail on sailboats, and sometimes it is also used to lift the anchor.

If friction is ignored, the mechanical benefit of all these machines is approximately equal to the crank length divided by the drum diameter. In the winch example shown in the figure, when the left rope is tightened and the handle or crank rotates clockwise, a force will be generated on the right side of the rope, which will act on the load to do work, such as raising or lowering the sail.
